What Is x402?
x402 is an open payment protocol that lets AI agents transact autonomously using stablecoins over standard HTTP. Instead of requiring human intervention for every purchase, subscription, or API call, agents can negotiate and settle payments on their own.
The protocol is named after HTTP 402 — the "Payment Required" status code that has existed since 1991 but was never widely used. The x402 Foundation is finally giving it a purpose.
